Progressive groups rally Senate for VP Sara Duterte's impeachment trial

Progressive groups are mounting a rally to urge the Senate to proceed with an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte following four impeachment complaints filed by the House.

ACT Teachers Representative France Castro stated they are organizing a large meeting with complainants of three previous impeachment cases and planning a mass mobilization to push for the Senate's action.

Senate President Chiz Escudero previously noted that legally an impeachment trial cannot be held until June 2 when the Senate resumes sessions after the midterm elections, but leaders hope senators will listen to public clamor.

House Deputy Majority Leader Francisco Paolo Ortega emphasized respect for the Senate’s jurisdiction while urging them to consider the public's demand for a swift resolution.

Of the seven articles of impeachment forwarded on February 5, House Assistant Majority Leader Ernesto Dionisio noted that conviction on only one article would be enough to remove Duterte from office, citing the National Bureau of Investigation's findings as significant evidence.
