Typhoon Carina forces evac., susp. classes in Ilocos

On Wednesday, at least 11 families remained in evacuation centers across low-lying areas of Banna, Burgos, and Laoag in Ilocos Norte due to ongoing bad weather.

Soil erosion near residential areas in Barangay Catagtaguen, Banna, and river overflow in Bacarra continue to pose risks; meanwhile, two additional families were evacuated from flooding in Barangay 2, Laoag City, while a house was partly buried by a landslide in Barangay Ba-rit.

In Ilocos Sur, evacuations continued with at least 88 families pre-emptively moved from 11 towns due to incessant rains and the threat of river overflow; two families were previously evacuated from landslides in Salcedo and Sigay municipalities on Tuesday.

Typhoon Carina intensified late Tuesday morning, raising Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 over Batanes and TCWS No. 1 in other areas including northern Ilocos Norte, with strong winds of 39 to 61 km/h expected within the next 36 hours.

Classes and work were suspended on Wednesday in parts of Ilocos Sur due to Typhoon Carina and southwest monsoon conditions.
