Senate not initiating VP Duterte’s impeachment during recess

Senate President Francis Escudero stated that there has been no official communication from the House of Representatives regarding the progress of impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Escudero reiterated on Thursday that the Senate will not initiate any impeachment proceedings during its recess period, citing legal and procedural constraints.

The House transmitted the impeachment documents to the Senate before Congress adjourned for the Eleksyon 2025 campaign, but Escudero emphasized that an impeachment court cannot be convened while the Senate is on break.

Escudero noted that verifying signatures and updating impeachment rules are necessary steps that will take place during the recess period.

The Senate will resume session on June 2 when it can formally address any received impeachment complaints according to proper procedures.
