DSWD-7 sets up 10 evacuation camps, distributes aid after Mt. Kanlaon eruption

The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7) has established 10 evacuation camps and distributed 11,888 family food packs and 5,990 non-food items to families displaced by the Dec. 9 eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.

Local government units ordered forced evacuations due to ongoing Alert Level 3, indicating intensified magmatic unrest around the volcano, with distribution efforts beginning immediately after the eruption.

Shelters are located across Canlaon City and include various schools such as Macario Española Memorial School and Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High Schools.

As of Tuesday, DSWD-7 reports that 1,809 families or 5,911 individuals have settled in the camps with modular tents provided at some locations for temporary shelter, while an additional 646 families are staying with relatives or friends and being monitored regularly.

Community kitchens run by local government units are preparing meals for evacuees, and DSWD-7 is organizing activities to maintain safety and security within the centers.
