Justice Sec Remulla appoints BI Deputy Commissioner Viado OIC after Tansingco's dismissal

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla designated Bureau of Immigration (BI) Deputy Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado as officer-in-charge following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s dismissal of Commissioner Norman Tansingco on Tuesday due to his failure to prevent the escape of dismissed Bamban Mayor Alice Guo and other lapses.

Remulla emphasized that Viado's appointment ensures continuity in services despite leadership changes, addressing growing concerns within the agency and assuring the public of uninterrupted immigration operations.

Tansingco was relieved for failing to address issues such as fake corporations issuing working visas and facilitating illegal gambling workers' entry into the country, as well as his delayed reporting of Mayor Guo's departure from the Philippines in July.

Deputy Commissioner Viado will serve as OIC until President Marcos Jr. appoints a new chief for the Bureau of Immigration under Justice Secretary Remulla's supervision.

Remulla expressed disappointment over Tansingco's lack of action and failure to manage matters that have compromised national security, highlighting ongoing issues with fake corporations issuing working visas and delayed notifications about Mayor Guo's escape.
