DOH reports record-high 21,819 new COVID-19 cases; active tally jumps to 77K

MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday reported a significant surge in coronavirus infections, logging 21,819 fresh cases which is the highest since September 12 when 21,411 cases were recorded. This brings the total number of confirmed infections to 2,910,664 and active cases to 77,369. Of these new cases, 99% occurred within the recent two weeks from December 25 to January 7, with NCR reporting the highest number at 13,634 or 63%, followed by Region 4A at 4,129 or 19%, and Region 3 at 2,084 or 10%. Additionally, there were 616 new recoveries bringing the recovery count to 2,781,424, representing 95.6% of all known infections.
