Cebu jails see surge in COVID-19 cases

As of Thursday, May 1, at least 332 inmates tested positive for coronavirus at Cebu City Jail, with 125 new cases confirmed.

The city government conducted mass testing on April 20 after an inmate who died from breathing difficulty was found to be infected.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia ordered a probe into the spread of COVID-19 in provincial jails following 18 positive cases at Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC).

On Wednesday, April 29, 17 inmates from CPDRC tested positive for coronavirus out of 20 new cases in Cebu province.

Inmates exhibiting flu-like symptoms were isolated and tested; strict measures including employee isolation have been imposed at the CPDRC since Sunday, April 26.
