VP Duterte-Carpio eager to face Senate impeachment court

Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio is "eager" to face the Senate impeachment court and present her case, according to her office.

Her legal team is pursuing lawsuits to stop the impeachment trial and dismiss the complaint, which they describe as "defective".

The House of Representatives impeached Duterte in February, citing allegations of budget misuse, unexplained wealth, and conspiracy to assassinate President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., his wife, and Speaker Martin Romualdez.

She has denied all accusations.

The impeachment complaint gained the support of more than 200 congressmen, exceeding the constitutional threshold.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman University Council has urged the Senate to "do its duty" and proceed "without delay" with the impeachment trial.

The council expressed dismay at attempts to slow down or derail the trial, stating that the Senate's decision to return the impeachment to Congress sets a dangerous precedent.

They noted that a national survey indicated most Filipinos want Duterte to respond to the charges and have an opportunity to clear her name in a Senate trial.
