UN expert visits PH to probe extrajudicial killings

A UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions, Morris Tidball-Binz, has arrived in the Philippines for a visit from February 6 to 9.

His visit, at the invitation of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, aims to improve local capacity in investigating extrajudicial killings and to provide closure for families of victims.

Remulla clarified that Tidball-Binz was invited in his capacity as a forensic expert, not as a special rapporteur.

The UN expert's visit is separate from the International Criminal Court's (ICC) investigation into the drug war.

This visit coincides with forensic pathologist Dr. Raquel Fortun's findings on Kian delos Santos' remains and previous discoveries of falsified death certificates for drug war victims.
