Senate issues show-cause order vs Meta-Facebook execs over online gambling inquiry

The Senate Committee on Games and Amusement has issued a show-cause order against Meta-Facebook Philippines executives for failing to attend an inquiry into online gambling activities on its social media platforms.

Meta cited the unavailability of its subject matter experts based in Singapore and the US as the reason for its absence, proposing a meeting at a later time.

Senator Erwin Tulfo, committee chairman, expressed strong disappointment and emphasized the urgency of the discussion, stating that Meta's experts should not dictate when they can appear.

He stressed the importance of Meta's cooperation, especially as online gambling operations are shifting to Meta's platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads.

Senator Risa Hontiveros formally moved for the issuance of the show-cause order against the representatives of Meta.

Tulfo warned that he would issue a subpoena to compel Meta's representatives' attendance at the next hearing.

Hontiveros seconded Tulfo's motion to summon Meta in the next hearing or face contempt.
