Rizal police destroy 440 boga devices for safe holidays

Authorities seized and destroyed 440 pieces of boga (improvised cannon) in Rizal on Tuesday as part of the Rizal Provincial Police Office (PPO) campaign for a safe holiday season.

Tin cans, plastic bottles, PVC pipes, and toy guns were among the materials used to make the prohibited noise-making device.

The destruction of the 'boga' was conducted manually by PPO officials using mallets and baseball clubs.

The use of these homemade cannons, which produce loud explosions mimicking real cannons, has been banned since 2006 by the Department of Health due to reported injuries.

The Rizal PPO stated that it will continue its fight against illegal firecrackers and warned that anyone found producing, distributing, or using them will be fined.

The Philippine National Police-Civil Security Group (PNP-CSG) has identified 28 prohibited firecrackers, including Watusi, Piccolo, Five Star (Bog), and Pla-Pla.

The PNP urged the public not to light firecrackers in residential areas to ensure safety, as the Department of Health has logged 17 firecracker-related injuries ahead of New Year revelries.
