DILG urges LGUs to enforce firecracker rules for safer New Year

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla urged local government units (LGUs) to strictly implement regulations on fireworks to minimize firecracker-related injuries during New Year's Eve celebrations.

LGUs must restrict firecracker use to permitted community displays and conduct public awareness campaigns on the dangers of prohibited fireworks.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is directed to ensure designated fireworks display zones comply with the Fire Code of the Philippines.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will seize and destroy illegal firecrackers to curb their use, and has released a list of prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

The DILG also urged the public to avoid purchasing illegal or hazardous fireworks and recommended safer alternatives such as horns and household items.

Several LGUs, including Quezon City, Caloocan City, and Pasig City, have already established designated fireworks display zones.

As of December 27, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 101 firecracker-related injuries nationwide since December 22.
