Paolo Duterte calls impeachment complaint vs. sister Sara 'political persecution'

Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte has denounced the House of Representatives' expedited move to impeach his sister, Vice President Sara Duterte, as "baseless" and "political persecution."

He stated that 215 members of the House filed the impeachment complaint based on seven grounds, including betrayal of public trust and graft and corruption, primarily stemming from the alleged misuse of P612 million in confidential funds by the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education.

Rep. Duterte condemned the signature gathering as a "desperate and politically-motivated" act and a "clear act of political persecution."

He warned the administration that they are "treading on dangerous ground" and face a "greater storm" if they proceed, referencing the Iglesia Ni Cristo's supporters.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. commented on Rep. Duterte's criticism, stating it was "not exactly surprising" and that the Congressman would naturally defend his sister.

Marcos mentioned that similar statements have been heard from Congressman Duterte before.
