The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has assured the public that there is enough blood supply, particularly platelets, for dengue patients nationwide amidst a continuing surge in cases.
PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon stated that the organization is prepared to supply blood anytime and anywhere, free of charge, urging the public not to hesitate to call 1158 if blood is needed.
From January to mid-February, the PRC dispensed over one thousand units of blood for dengue patients, more than double the amount dispensed during the same period last year.
The Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed an upward trend in dengue cases, with over 28,000 recorded as of February.
Quezon City has declared a dengue outbreak, and surges in cases are also noted in Negros Occidental, Paranaque City, and Iloilo.
The PRC is also prepared to help curb infections through its B.E.A.T. approach: break breeding sites, educate the community, assist dengue patients and hospitals, and trace dengue hotspots.
PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang highlighted the critical need for blood donations during dengue outbreaks and encouraged regular blood donation as a life-saving practice.
