PNP to help DOTr in 30-day pilot study to increase transport capacity to 70%

The Philippine National Police (PNP), particularly the Highway Patrol Group, will assist the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in a 30-day pilot study to gradually increase public transport passenger capacity.

The pilot run, starting November 4, will increase the operational capacity of public road-based and rail transportation in Metro Manila and nearby provinces from 50% to 70%.

PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar emphasized that commuters must strictly adhere to minimum public health standards, stating that safety is the responsibility of both drivers and passengers.

Traditional jeepneys will be allowed to accommodate an additional four to five passengers, while modern jeepneys and public utility buses may allow standing passengers.

The one-seat-apart policy for seated passengers will remain in place.

This initiative aims to determine if public transportation can resume full operations amidst the ongoing pandemic.
