DOTr to pilot 70% capacity for public transport starting Nov 4

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will implement a 30-day pilot study of the gradual increase in passenger capacities in all forms of public transport in Metro Manila and nearby provinces starting November 4.

This decision follows the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases' (IATF) approval of increasing operational capacity from 50% to 70% for public road-based and rail transportation.

Traditional jeepney drivers will be allowed to accommodate an additional four to five passengers, while modern jeepneys and public utility buses can accommodate standing passengers.

The one-seat-apart policy remains for public utility buses.

DOTr Assistant Secretary Steve Pastor cited foreign studies suggesting public transport is not a significant vector for coronavirus transmission and the high COVID-19 vaccination rate in the capital region as reasons for the increase.

Commuters are still required to observe health protocols such as wearing face masks and face shields.
