PNP seizes over 144,000 illegal firecrackers nationwide

Authorities nationwide have seized 144,866 illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices amid the holiday season.

Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered an intensified crackdown on these items, directing all chiefs of police to conduct aggressive operations both on the ground and online.

In Calabarzon alone, up to P4.8 million worth of illegal firecrackers were destroyed, including 28,296 pieces and four boxes of more explosive brands.

Twelve people, including businessmen and retailers, were arrested in simultaneous anti-illegal firecracker operations across Calabarzon.

Data from Calabarzon police shows five people are currently being treated for injuries caused by firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.

Four boxes of powerful dart bombs, seized in stings in Cavite and Laguna, will be presented as evidence in court and were not among those destroyed.

Nartatez emphasized that the destruction of confiscated items aims to save lives and prevent injuries during the holiday season.

He also appealed to the public to use safe alternative noise-making materials for New Year celebrations.
