PISTON to push nationwide transport strike vs PUVMP

PISTON will proceed with its three-day nationwide transport strike from November 20 to 23, 2023, to protest the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Approximately 100,000 PISTON members and their federations are expected to participate in the strike.

PISTON president Mody Floranda stated that they are not against consolidation if the government guarantees operators will retain ownership of their franchises under the modernization program.

The group fears the PUVMP will lead to the seizure of franchises and the creation of transportation monopolies by large corporations, citing the high cost of compliance which can exceed P2 million.

Despite an appeal from authorities to call off the strike, PISTON maintains its stance, asserting that the government's threat of franchise revocation violates their right to strike and seek redress.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported that consolidation of drivers for transport modernization has reached nearly 70 percent.
