Transport group Manibela began a three-day nationwide strike on November 22 to protest the government's Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.
Manibela President Mar Valbuena stated that their group will stop operations nationwide due to unheeded complaints against the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
The strike is a response to the December 31 deadline for the consolidation of traditional public utility jeepneys, which Manibela opposes as modern jeeps are too expensive.
Manibela warned that if the deadline is not extended, jeepney operators will become 'colorum' starting January 1, 2024.
Members of other transport groups Pasang Masda and Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (FEJODAP) joined Manibela's strike, as did Piston.
LTFRB spokesperson Celine Pialago stated that most of PISTON's major requests regarding the PUV Modernization Program are doable, and that the LTFRB remains committed to genuine dialogue with the striking groups.
