Transport strike looms as PUV consolidation deadline nears

PISTON, representing an estimated 100,000 members, held a nationwide transport strike from November 20 to November 22, 2023, to protest the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista affirmed that industry consolidation into cooperatives or corporations is a "non-negotiable" component of the PUVMP.

The strike was conducted by Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (Piston) and Manibela in protest of the December 31 deadline for the consolidation of traditional public utility jeepneys.

While the government is willing to address other demands, Bautista stated that they "can't allow those who don't want to consolidate."

Regarding the demand to extend the validity of PUV franchises to 5 years, Bautista said this can already be done for new vehicles.

PUV drivers and operators can avail of fuel subsidy while their franchise is being transferred by showing valid documents of the transfer.
