PH COVID-19 cases reach 500,000

The Philippines' total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has reached half a million, with the Department of Health (DOH) reporting 1,895 new infections on Sunday, January 17.

This brings the country's total caseload to 500,577, with 9,895 deaths and 465,991 recoveries recorded to date.

Currently, there are 24,691 active COVID-19 cases nationwide.

To mitigate the spread of the virus, especially the UK-originated B117 variant, the Philippines has implemented a travel ban on 34 countries until January 31.

The government has also issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and secured 25 million doses of Sinovac's CoronaVac vaccine.
