PDEA, BOC seize P111M worth of shabu from Mexico

Agents from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) seized P111,112,000 worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or "shabu."

The contraband, weighing 16.34 kilograms, was discovered concealed within wax inside five handmade paintings shipped from Mexico.

The parcel was declared as 'handmade cultural craft paintings' and was consigned to an individual in Barangay Gaya-Gaya, San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan.

The drugs were found in a September 26 joint operation involving PDEA, BOC-NAIA, and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group.

Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio stated that the BOC remains relentless and will heighten border control measures against new smuggling methods.

In the first half of the year, the BOC has seized P2.28 billion worth of illegal drugs through 80 operations, with shabu accounting for P1.24 billion.
