NTF-ELCAC warns anti-red tagging bill may shield terrorists

The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) warned that the proposed Anti-Red-Tagging Bill could shield individuals and groups involved in terrorism and insurgency.

NTF-ELCAC executive director Undersecretary Ernesto Torres Jr. stated that the bill risks turning truth-tellers into criminals while shielding enablers of insurgency under the cloak of victimhood.

The task force believes the bill could criminalize legitimate national security disclosures and silence former rebels and victims.

They also fear the bill could empower the underground networks of the CPP-NPA-NDF by allowing them to exploit freedoms and operate under the guise of victimhood.

House Bill 213, filed by ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co, proposes penalties of up to six years imprisonment for public officials or employees found guilty of red-tagging.

The bill also stipulates harsher penalties under the Revised Penal Code if red-tagging leads to injury, death, or enforced disappearance.
