NBI, BIR seize P870,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes in Nueva Ecija

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) confiscated P870,000 worth of imported cigarettes in Nueva Ecija last September 9.

The operation was conducted after three search warrants were issued by the Cabanatuan City Regional Trial Court for the premises and vehicle of Jonifer Lajom in Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija.

Jonifer Lajom is accused of allegedly keeping and selling assorted imported cigarette brands.

During the operation, 58 boxes of assorted imported cigarette brands were discovered, although Jonifer Lajom was not present at the time.

Another individual, Maricel Lajom, was present at the location and was invited to the NBI-Tarlac District Office for identification.

A criminal complaint is being prepared against Jonifer Lajom for alleged violations of the National Internal Revenue Code.

The confiscated cigarettes have been turned over to the BIR for proper disposition.
