Meralco unit to build 49 MW battery storage system in Cebu

Meralco PowerGen Corporation's (MGEN) subsidiary, Toledo Energy Development Corp., has contracted with CATL and SUMEC to construct a 49-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) in Toledo, Cebu.

The project's construction is scheduled to commence in September 2025.

The initial phase of 25 MW is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2026 to help stabilize the Visayas grid.

The remaining capacity is anticipated to be completed in 2027, pending regulatory approvals.

CATL will provide the battery technology, while SUMEC will manage the engineering, procurement, and construction.
