The democracy advocacy coalition 1SAMBAYAN is concerned about undue pressure and political interference in the selection of the next Ombudsman.

1SAMBAYAN questioned the timing of legal complaints against Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla, a top contender for the post.

The coalition believes these cases may be intended to influence the Judicial and Bar Council's (JBC) deliberations and disqualify nominees based on political considerations rather than merit.

1SAMBAYAN warned that such actions could undermine the JBC's independence and be a disservice to the Constitution and the Filipino people.

The group issued a manifesto urging the JBC to uphold its duty to evaluate candidates solely on merit, experience, and ethical standing.

1SAMBAYAN emphasized that the JBC must resolutely uphold its independence and resist any attempts to politicize the selection process.
