Makabayan bloc: Emergency powers dangerous than COVID-19

The Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives considers the grant of emergency powers to President Duterte more dangerous than the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bloc of six opposition lawmakers claims the administration is exploiting the COVID-19 situation to grant the president excessive powers, likening it to a 'virtual undeclared martial law'.

House Bill 6616, also known as the 'We Heal as One Bill,' was set for approval through a teleconferencing session, granting Duterte broad authority over government operations and public funds.

The Makabayan group argued that the proposed law gives Duterte 'too much power' and includes 'draconian measures' for his COVID-19 response, which they believe is an overreach compared to measures in other affected countries.

They criticized the bill for reflecting President Duterte's tendency to use force and for failing to include provisions for economic relief for workers during the lockdown period.
