Magnitude 6.0 quake hits Surigao del Norte; classes suspended in 36 LGUs

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake, tectonic in origin, struck Surigao del Norte at 7:03 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, with its epicenter 13 kilometers southeast of General Luna.

Intensity V was recorded in several areas of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands, with Intensity IV felt in parts of Southern Leyte, Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao City.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol indicated the Philippine Trench as the likely source, originating from a different segment.

While no tsunami warning was issued, aftershocks and potential damage were expected.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) - Caraga reported partial damage to one house, the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office in San Benito, and one classroom each at Maribojoc Elementary School and Nueva Estrella Central Elementary School.

Classes were suspended in 36 local government units across Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, and Agusan del Sur.

No damage to bridges and roads has been reported thus far.
