House probe into drug smuggling to continue despite Duterte family links

Deputy Speaker David Suarez urged Vice President Sara Duterte that the House of Representatives' quad-committee probe into drug smuggling should continue despite allegations involving her husband and brother.

He emphasized that legislators' work is purely professional and not personal, and ceasing an investigation due to the involvement of prominent figures would render them unworthy of public trust and votes.

Vice President Duterte had previously described the allegations against her husband and brother as political harassment.

Lawmakers are now urging the Vice President to convince her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, and her brother Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte to appear before the House quad-committee.

The quad-committee invited Carpio and Rep. Duterte after former Bureau of Customs (BOC) intelligence officer Jimmy Guban accused them of having ties to a missing shabu shipment in 2018.

Guban testified that former Environment Undersecretary Benny Antiporda sent emissaries in 2018 to warn him against naming Rep. Duterte, Carpio, and businessman Michael Yang as individuals involved in the P6.8-billion shabu shipment.
