House eyes more funds for OFW repatriation

The House of Representatives is preparing to augment funds for the repatriation of over 100,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This additional funding is expected to be included in the proposed Bayanihan 2 bill, also known as the We Recover as One Act, which is a priority for Congress when it reconvenes on July 27.

Rep. Mike Defensor stated that the goal is to bring home jobless OFWs and provide for their reintegration.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Sarah Arriola reported that as of last week, PHP770 million of the PHP1-billion Assistance to Nationals fund has been used for OFW repatriation.

She also noted that the remaining PHP230 million is expected to be depleted next month, with approximately 107,000 OFWs still awaiting repatriation.

The DFA estimates that each charter flight for repatriation costs between PHP12 million and PHP13 million.
