DFA uses P2.25B fund for OFW repatriation

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will utilize its P2.25 billion capital outlay fund to support the repatriation of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by job losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. announced that the DFA has already shouldered the expenses for the repatriation of 96,228 OFWs, which included flight costs, immigration penalties, and visa fees.

These repatriated OFWs consist of 41,981 seafarers and 54,247 land-based workers who largely lost their employment because of the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19.

Secretary Locsin stated that the DFA is reallocating all its capital outlay spending towards bringing Filipinos home, emphasizing President Duterte's commitment to OFWs.

Additionally, the DFA has set aside a standby fund for its embassies and consulate general offices to provide emergency supplies, medical aid, food, and accommodation for OFWs significantly impacted by the pandemic.
