Hontiveros to form independent Senate bloc

Senator Risa Hontiveros has stated her intention to form an independent bloc within the Senate, ruling out alignment with allies of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

This move comes in response to remarks from Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, who indicated plans to form a "solid bloc" with other Duterte allies.

Hontiveros expressed her disinterest in joining any group that aligns with the Duterte bloc, prioritizing the maintenance and strengthening of the opposition.

Her alternative plan involves establishing an independent bloc with potential political allies to continue performing checks and balances and fiscalization.

This independent bloc aims to extend their role in forming a broader opposition outside the Senate.

Hontiveros acknowledged that the organization of the Senate, including the formation of minority and majority blocs, ultimately depends on numerical strength.

She was also asked about her interest in becoming the next Senate minority leader.
