Duterte seeks emergency powers to combat COVID-19

President Duterte is utilizing all available government resources to combat the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of Filipinos.

He has asked Congress for emergency powers through the proposed "Bayanihan Act of 2020" to implement urgent measures against the coronavirus crisis, including realigning funds and allowing for the temporary takeover of essential private businesses.

Congress convened a special session to discuss the proposed legislation, which seeks to grant the President special powers for a limited period and subject to restrictions.

The proposed legislation aims to expedite the procurement of crucial medical supplies such as PPEs and testing kits, and to establish temporary medical facilities.

Malacañang urged the public to disregard false information regarding the COVID-19 situation and to pray for front line workers, some of whom have died and fallen sick.

The powers sought would allow for swift response to the evolving health crisis and provision of food assistance to those economically dislocated by the quarantine.
