Sen Hontiveros rejects extra powers for Duterte on COVID-19

Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros rejected proposals to grant President Duterte additional powers to combat the coronavirus pandemic, stating that existing laws are sufficient.

Hontiveros emphasized that Republic Act No. 11332, the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act, provides comprehensive mechanisms for epidemic response.

She also highlighted that the Government Procurement Reform Act (RA 9184) allows for faster procurement of necessary resources during calamities.

Instead of additional powers, Hontiveros called for the immediate allocation of a supplemental budget to support healthcare workers, COVID-19 patients, and vulnerable Filipinos.

She advocated for increased mass testing, especially for high-risk individuals like health workers and the elderly, and the establishment of temporary health facilities.

Hontiveros also urged for the swift distribution of relief packages, including cash assistance and food subsidies, to families severely affected by the enhanced community quarantine.

She stressed that the government should ensure ample funding to complement the efforts of local government units in providing basic necessities to their constituents.

Hontiveros cited the plight of sick and deceased health workers and hungry families due to loss of livelihood as urgent problems that do not require more executive powers.

She concluded by stating that the people need concrete solutions focusing on a comprehensive health strategy, expanded health capacity, economic safety nets, and effective patient care.
