Duterte orders DSWD to procure tarpaulins for typhoon victims

President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to procure tarpaulin sheets within 48 hours for families displaced by Typhoon Odette.

The tarpaulins are intended as an immediate, temporary shelter solution for affected families in Visayas and Mindanao.

President Duterte also suggested utilizing felled coconut trees for makeshift homes, particularly in areas like Siargao.

Acting presidential spokesperson Karlo Nograles clarified that the tarpaulin purchase is for immediate relief, with government procurement of permanent housing construction materials scheduled for January to March 2022 due to procurement and delivery processes.

The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), in coordination with USAID and the International Organization for Migration, has already distributed 5,598 shelter-grade tarpaulin sheets to affected communities.
