DSWD prepares 100,000 food packs for Kanlaon Volcano threat

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is preparing 100,000 food packs for the Visayas region due to the elevated threat of Kanlaon Volcano.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian has directed the Disaster Response Management Group to expedite the augmentation of food pack stockpiles in field offices across Western Visayas and Central Visayas.

Additional food packs are expected to arrive by Sunday, January 12, with a target to deliver 40,000 boxes each to Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental by Monday, January 13.

These prepositioned food packs are intended to support families in Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental who may be displaced by a possible eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned on Saturday, January 11, that pressure is building inside Kanlaon Volcano, potentially leading to an eruption similar to the one on December 9, 2024.

Kanlaon Volcano had erupted twice in 2024, on June 3 and December 9.
