DPWH probes bridge collapse after dump truck overload

A 60-meter segment of the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela collapsed on February 27 after a dump truck carrying 100 tons of boulders passed over it, injuring six individuals.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is still investigating the cause of the collapse and assessing if other segments of the bridge were compromised.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan stated that the bridge, which began construction in 2014 and was only recently opened, was designed for light vehicles.

Signages indicating "for light vehicles only" were posted at the ends of the bridge, yet heavy trucks carrying approximately 100 tons of boulders used it.

Preliminary assessments indicate the affected segment was stressed at 200 percent beyond its capacity.

The DPWH has sought assistance from the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines to assess the bridge and determine its rehabilitation.
