The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is open to dialogue with transport groups regarding the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) and is refining it based on feedback.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista expressed confidence that issues can be resolved through communication and assured that the program aims to ensure no one is left behind.
Bautista reached out to Piston president Mody Floranda to address misconceptions about the PUVMP, such as the alleged phase-out of traditional jeepneys, the high cost of modern units, and the supposed mandatory purchase of P2 million jeepneys.
The DOTr's statement comes after Piston staged a three-day nationwide transport strike protesting the December 31 deadline for the consolidation of traditional jeepneys.
Following discussions, LTFRB chief Teofilo Guadiz III agreed to review Piston's proposals and convene a meeting before the end of the month.
Many jeepney operators and drivers have already successfully consolidated into cooperatives and complied with the program.
