DOJ to start probe on missing sabungeros cases

The Department of Justice (DOJ) will proceed to preliminary investigations for the missing 'sabungeros' cases after completing the evaluation of related complaints.

Prosecutor General Richard Anthony Fadullon stated that subpoenas will be issued once the panel receives all relevant records for the preliminary investigation.

Relatives of the missing sabungeros filed murder and serious illegal detention complaints against gaming tycoon Charlie Atong Ang before the DOJ.

Whistleblower Julie Patidongan previously identified a group of individuals, including Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto, allegedly involved in the cockfighting industry and believed to have ordered the disappearances.

Both Ang and Barretto have denied involvement in the disappearances and alleged killings.

Diving operations in Taal Lake have been conducted, leading to the recovery of partial remains, where Patidongan claimed victims' remains were disposed of.
