DA reports increased pork price compliance in Metro Manila

The Department of Agriculture (DA) reported a significant increase in compliance with the Maximum Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for pork in Metro Manila wet markets, rising from 6% to 25% within two weeks of its implementation on March 10.

The MSRP sets pork prices at P380 per kilogram for liempo and P250 per kilogram for kasim and pigue, though pork in supermarkets and hypermarkets are exempt due to higher operating costs.

This price control measure was introduced to address challenges in the pork industry, particularly the impact of African Swine Fever (ASF).

While prices are gradually decreasing, with the average price now at P360, some markets still exceed the suggested retail prices, with kasim sold up to P420 per kilo and liempo up to P470 per kilo.

The DA plans to investigate and take legal action against those abusing the price control measure.

Additionally, a 'Pork-For-All' program will be launched in Kadiwa outlets and select markets, where the DA will directly purchase pork to offer it at a lower price.
