DA probes low compliance to pork SRP in Metro Manila

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is investigating low compliance with the suggested retail prices (SRP) for pork in Metro Manila, with only 20% of monitored retailers adhering to the price cap.

The SRP sets maximum prices at P380 per kilogram for liempo, P350 for kasim and pigue, and P300 for whole pig carcasses delivered to sellers.

Despite the price caps, monitoring shows pork prices in Metro Manila wet markets still range from P230 to P470 per kilogram.

Pork producers, through the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), claim they are complying with the farmgate price of around P230 per kilogram, which is lower than previous prices.

SINAG Executive Director Jayson Cainglet stated that producers have complied with the P230 per kilogram farmgate price for the past two weeks to help bring down retail prices.

DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa previously suggested the issue might stem from producers or traders, as retailers were reportedly buying pork below the P300 per kilo set for traders.
