Comelec to summon Chiz Escudero over contractor’s campaign donation
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will summon Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero next week to explain a P30 million campaign donation he received from a contractor for his 2022 senatorial bid.
Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia stated that a show cause order will be issued against Escudero after the president of Centerways Construction and Development Inc., Lawrence Lubiano, met with the poll body through his legal counsel.
The contractor's lawyers have already appeared before the Comelec.
Earlier, a show cause order was issued against Lubiano, asking him to explain the donation and defend why he should not be charged with an election offense for violating Section 95 of the Omnibus Election Code.
This section prohibits individuals and entities holding government contracts from making political donations.
The Comelec is investigating 55 contractors suspected of making prohibited donations during the 2022 elections.
