Chiz Escudero to attend Comelec probe on P30M campaign donation

Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero will attend an investigation by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) regarding a P30 million campaign donation from a contractor for his 2022 senatorial bid.

Escudero has sent a letter to the Comelec expressing his readiness to be investigated.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia confirmed that Escudero has made an admission regarding the donation.

The contractor, Lawrence Lubiano of Centerways Construction and Development Inc., had previously admitted to giving the P30 million campaign fund.

A show cause order was initially issued against Lubiano for allegedly violating a law prohibiting government contractors from making political donations.

Garcia clarified that Escudero is among the first to be summoned because the contractor admitted to the donation and the senator confirmed it.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia has inhibited himself from the investigation due to a previous professional relationship with Escudero.

The Comelec is investigating 55 contractors suspected of making prohibited donations during the 2022 elections.
