183 senatorial aspirants file COCs for May 2025 polls

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) concluded the filing period for Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the May 2025 elections on October 8, 2024.

A total of 183 senatorial aspirants filed their COCs, which Comelec Chairperson George Garcia described as a "record" number for the polls.

This number surpasses the 176 aspirants in 2022 and 153 in 2019.

Garcia attributed the increase to more Filipinos genuinely wanting to serve, the return of former senators, incumbent reelectionists, and an increase in political parties fielding senatorial candidates.

Alongside senatorial aspirants, 190 party-list groups filed their Certificates of Nomination and Acceptance (CONAs).

The number of party-list groups significantly decreased from previous elections.

Comelec aims to resolve all nuisance cases by November 30, with the final list of qualified candidates to be published on December 13.

The filing period was generally peaceful, though one death was confirmed in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur on the final day.
