The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has confirmed that the vote-counting machines (VCMs) used in the 2022 elections will be their final use.
Poll Commissioner Marlon Casquejo stated that these VCMs will not be utilized in the 2025 elections or subsequent polls due to their age and efficiency concerns.
Casquejo explained that the VCMs have reached the end of their lifespan, a determination also recommended by the Commission on Audit (COA).
Purchased in 2019 and refurbished in 2021, the VCMs have been in service since the 2016 elections.
The Comelec is uncertain if the machines can be repurposed for other tasks, such as scoring examinations, after the elections.
