The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)-Southeastern Mindanao Region (SEMRO) has filed five criminal charges against a 21-year-old Chinese national, identified as Hanlin Qiu and using the Filipino name Hengson Lemosnero.
He was arrested at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) office in Ecoland, Davao City, for attempting to obtain a Philippine passport using falsified documents, including a fake birth certificate.
The DFA alerted the NBI after noticing the questionable documents presented by the suspect.
The suspect is reportedly one of approximately 200 Chinese nationals who acquired falsified birth certificates from the municipal civil registry of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
NBI-SEMRO director Atty. Archie Albao stated that the suspect will be deported after his cases in the Philippines are concluded.
Albao believes the number of Chinese nationals who obtained Philippine birth certificates in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, might increase, as the initial 200 applicants were only recorded from 2018 and 2019.
Sta. Cruz mayor Jose Nelson Sala Sr. welcomed the investigation into the alleged acquisition of Philippine birth certificates by numerous Chinese nationals.
