Bong Go urges DSWD, LGUs to prioritize aid for seniors amid COVID-19 threat

Senator Christopher Lawrence 'Bong' Go urged the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government units (LGUs) to provide additional support to senior citizens amidst the growing threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Go highlighted that the elderly are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19 due to their compromised immune systems, making them more susceptible to respiratory infections.

He called on the DSWD to prioritize social welfare and protection programs such as the Social Pension for indigent senior citizens, Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS), and distribution of Food and Non-Food Items (FNIs).

The Senator also recommended the Sustainable Livelihood Programs (SLPs) as a means to help affected families cope with economic losses after the quarantine period.

Go reiterated the government advisory for seniors, individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, and pregnant women to stay at home to minimize their risk of infection.

He also identified other vulnerable sectors, including solo parents, indigent indigenous peoples, public transport drivers, and informal economy workers, who should also receive priority assistance.

To ensure efficient distribution of aid, Go advocated for a door-to-door delivery system, with LGUs assisting the DSWD due to their access to relevant data.

He reminded the government to strengthen the implementation of Republic Act (RA) 9994, the 'Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010,' which outlines various benefits for senior citizens.

These benefits include a monthly stipend for indigent seniors, free medical and vaccination services, and special discounts on basic commodities.

Go stressed the importance of serving the Filipino people without compromising their health during this challenging time.
