BI intensifies battle vs online scammers
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has arrested 86 foreign nationals, including 82 Chinese, three Malaysians, and one Vietnamese, in Makati for involvement in an online scam operation.
The raid, conducted on April 10 in a condominium along Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue, was prompted by a distress message from a Chinese national who reported being held against his will.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado stated that the operation addresses the threat of illegal aliens exploiting digital platforms for cross-border scams.
The arrested foreigners are undergoing booking and documentation procedures and will be detained at the BI facility in Camp Bagong Diwa while awaiting deportation.
The suspects allegedly used e-commerce and love scam tactics and failed to present work permits.
The operation was a collaboration between the BI and the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
