BI thwarts 14 Filipinos from human trafficking

Fourteen Filipinos, believed to be victims of human trafficking, were prevented from leaving the Philippines by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The first group of three individuals, aged 27 to 33, were intercepted on February 4 while attempting to travel to Thailand.

They confessed to being recruited to work as customer service representatives for a fraudulent business process outsourcing (BPO) company in Cambodia.

The following day, immigration officers intercepted another 11 individuals in their mid-20s at NAIA Terminal 1, also attempting to fly to Bangkok, Thailand.

This second group claimed to be students but were promised a monthly salary of P50,000 to work at fraudulent BPOs in Pakistan.

Their recruiter instructed them to pose as tourists and hide their Pakistani visas.

The BI referred the victims to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) for assistance, with ongoing efforts to prosecute their recruiters.
