Alas Pilipinas opens FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship on Sept 12

The Philippine men's national volleyball team, Alas Pilipinas, will debut in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, hosted by the Philippines from September 12 to 28 at the Mall of Asia Arena and the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Alas Pilipinas is grouped with Tunisia, Iran, and Egypt in Pool A, and their opening match is against Tunisia on September 12 at 7 p.m.

Notable players on the 14-man roster include team captain Bryan Bagunas, Marck Espejo, Leo Ordiales, Michaelo Buddin, Jade Disquitado, Louie Ramirez, Kim Malabunga, Jack Kalingking, Vince Lorenzo, Owa Retamar, and Eco Adajar.

The team, mentored by Italian Angiolino Frigoni, underwent European training camps to prepare for the 32-nation tournament.

Despite being underdogs ranked No. 82 in the world, Alas Pilipinas aims for improvement and to learn from their international counterparts.

Tunisia, ranked No. 43, brings championship experience as 11-time African champions and will feature key players like Hamza Nagga and Khaled Ben Slimene, though Wassim Ben Tara will be absent.

Team captain Bryan Bagunas expressed excitement for the historic event and the chance to showcase Philippine volleyball on the world stage, noting the team's balance of veterans and younger players.

Coach Frigoni has called for fan support, emphasizing that the team cannot succeed alone.
