174,000 OFWs repatriated amid pandemic

More than 174,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been repatriated by the Philippine government since April due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has reported a total of 10,070 COVID-19 cases among Filipinos abroad.

At least 264 remains of OFWs have been repatriated since the start of the pandemic, with 170 of these cases confirmed to be COVID-19 related.

OWWA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac noted the urgency of repatriating COVID-19 remains due to potential health threats and differing cremation protocols in some Middle Eastern countries.

The repatriation of deceased OFWs, which previously took about a month, has been delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
